TUAW Review: Twitter for iPad

Posted by macjunkie on 3rd September 2010 in Apple

As soon as the official Twitter app for iPad (free) hit the App Store, you could tell that it was going to be a controversial app. Immediately, the twitterverse was filled with people either commenting on how much they loved the innovative and unique user interface, and others ranting about how much they despised the UI. One of our bloggers said that she enjoyed the new features of Twitter for iPad so much that she “wanted to have a cigarette after I was done, and I don’t even smoke.” On the other hand, TJ Luoma reported in his first look at the Twitter app that “… judging by most of the comments of people that I follow on Twitter, the initial reaction is definitely one of ‘too busy’ and ‘over designed.’ “

Of course, I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I have been a fan of Twittelator for iPad ($4.99) since it appeared in the App Store, so I wasn’t expecting that Twitter would make an impact on my tweeting. Wrong. After a few hours of using the free Twitter app on my iPad, I’m pretty well smitten with it. The rest of this post describes how the Twitter app works to let you do more tweeting and less fumbling around trying to figure out how to do something. Be sure to take a look at the gallery below for screenshots of Twitter for iPad in action.

Apple now building 2M iPads per month to meet demand

Posted by macjunkie on 3rd September 2010 in Apple

Apple now building 2M iPads per month to meet demandApple has doubled its monthly output capacity of the iPad and is now manufacturing 2 million per month to meet strong consumer demand, but the company reportedly would like to go even further and produce 3 million every month very soon.

Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley indicated that iPad builds recently increased to 2 million per month, up from the previous number of just 1 million a month. Apple allegedly indicated to its suppliers that it would like to produce 3 million a month starting in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010.

It’s likely not coincidental that less than a week ago, iPad shipping times for new orders from apple.com improved to 24 hours. For months, customers had to wait an estimated 7 to 10 days, as Apple was surprised by strong demand for the device when it launched in April.

Officials with the company admitted they were initially caught off guard by the demand for the iPad after it launched, and they were unsure when they would be able to satisfy that demand. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook noted that the iPad is not taking a typical early adopter curve, and already has a “very big” market.

“We want to take full advantage of it, and so we are investing enormous time and resources in increasing our capability in getting iPad out to as many people as we can,” Cook said in July.

Despite strong demand, Huberty reiterated that the iPad has not cannibalized sales of Macs. She noted that U.S. Mac sales are tracking up 20 to 25 percent year over year, and have been accelerating in recent weeks.

TUAW’s Daily App: Mirror’s Edge

Posted by macjunkie on 3rd September 2010 in Apple

Usually, we like to use this space to highlight developers and apps that could use a little more exposure, not call out big-budget titles from developers like Electronic Arts. But this one’s worth it — Mirror’s Edge is a pretty terrific, completely original translation of the plaforming game that arrived on consoles last year. It was out on the iPad at launch earlier this year, and now the game has made its way to the iPhone, bringing Retina Display graphics and the same well done gameplay.

Out of all of the “major” game publishers, EA has shown Apple quite a bit of love in the past, and this is probably the company’s best original (in mechanics, if not actually name or premise) title for the iOS platform. It’s a real shame that it took so long for this one to make it around to the handheld, but now that it’s here, it is worth the $4.99 purchase price for those looking for a premium iPhone experience.

And heck, if that’s too much, just be patient another eight months or so and you’ll probably see the game on sale. If you’re interested in this gameplay at all — basically a complicated Canabalt, with heroine Faith running, sliding and shooting her way across rooftops — definitely give it a look.

iPhone Spam Strikes Facebook and Ping

They may not be bosom buddies at the moment, but Facebook and Ping are together in feeling the pain of spam — in this case, the kind that touts supposedly “free” iPhones, as if there could ever be such a thing.

9to5Mac is reporting
on the spamming attack that struck Facebook last weekend and is currently hitting Apple’s new Ping service, launched on Wednesday. Both services appear to be lucrative targets for spammers to rein in new victims, in this case by offering a “free” iPhone for those foolish enough to get trapped. (Spoiler: There is no such thing as a “free” iPhone.)

“For a few hours on Sunday, there was a spamming incident on Facebook,” reads the message posted for affected users by the site’s security team. “During this time, photos (mostly of supposedly “free” iPhones) were posted to some people’s Walls, including yours. We’ve removed the photo from your Wall and fixed the issue that allowed spammers to do this. We’re sorry about the photo, but can assure you that did this did not affect the security of your account in any way.”

Be that as it may, it doesn’t resolve the question of how the spam wound up there to begin with, according to Internet security firm Sophos. Apparently “thousands of users” had their Facebook Walls affected by the iPhone spam, and now Apple’s Ping appears to be the next target in their sights.

Sadly, for now it appears that Ping users will have to grin and bear it. “Ping implements no spam or URL filtering,” explains Sophos, who claims that the service — less than 48 hours old — is “drowning in scams and spams.”
